Voice controlled microwave powered by the Raspberry Pi

Developer Nathan Broadbent has successfully hacked his microwave with a Raspberry Pi micro-computer to become the smartest microwave in the world. Apart from having the best name in consumer electronics, the Raspberry Picrowave can be customised with startup, shutdown and task complete tones as well as having a few nifty ways of being used. To create the Raspberry Picrowave Nathan had to wire the Raspberry Pi into the microwave’s power supply, design a new control panel and etching and producing a custom PC Board that fits in the place of the microwave’s original one.

Here’s a list of what it can do so far:

  • Clock sets/updates itself via the Internet
  • A barcode scanner pulls cooking instructions from an online database (which until now did not exist so Broadbent is building one himself)
  • Set the microwave with voice commands, like “Microwave, fifteen seconds, defrost.”
  • Control the microwave from your iPad
  • Custom sound effects
  • The Raspberry Picrowave even tweets when it’s done cooking

If nothing else this brings the Internet of things close to an application that most of use would like to see. Batchelors around the world will rejoice for the ability to have a microwave that can cook to instruction just by scanning the barcode.
