US government recognises pro gamers as professional athletes

Riot Games, developer of the free-to-play online RPG League of Legends (LoL; yes, really) has secured a victory that could prove to be very important for professional gaming. This past weekend the company’s eSports division, which had been campaigning with the US government, revealed that the American government will from now on recognise LoL players as professional athletes.

Not only does this go a long way to ensure that pro gamers get visibility and recognition, it could also pave the way for gamers of other professional titles to get the privilege of a P1 Visa, the permit required by professional athletes to ply their trade on American soil.
