How to control another PC remotely using Google Chrome

Did you know that Google’s Chrome browser does a whole lot more than just let you surf the internet? It has a bunch of cool apps and utilities that you can download for it through the Chrome Store, including a tool that can remotely control your or someone else’s PC as if you’re sitting in front of it.

The performance you’ll experience relies heavily on the speed of your internet connection, but even on a slow connection it’s possible to see someone else’s screen remotely. That’s a very handy thing to have when you’re troubleshooting your mom’s laptop over the phone and you need to see her screen with your own eyes because she refuses to listen to what you’re saying.

This handy guide will walk you through the process of installing and using Chrome Remote Desktop.

1Get Chrome
Step 1: Download and install Chrome. A handy dialogue box appears when you open Google.com with Internet Explorer asking if you’d like to get Chrome. Click it.
2Log into Google
Step 2: Once Chrome has been downloaded and installed, sign into the browser with your Google account.
3Get CRD from Chrome Store
Step 3: Type Chrome Remote Desktop in Google’s search box. Follow the link to the Chrome Store, download and install the app.
4Open Chrome Select CRD
Step 4: Launch Chrome. If you don’t see an option called Chrome Remote Desktop right away, open a new tab. You should see it there.
5Authorise
Step 5: You’ll go through a few steps authorising remote access to the PC you’re on.
6Choose
Step 6: Once authorised, you’ll end up here. If you want to control someone else’s PC, select “See and control a shared computer”. You will need them to have Chrome and the remote desktop app installed as well, so if necessary talk them through the process you just followed.
7Exchange Numbers
Step 7: Have the person whose PC you want to access read you the 12-digit access number that is generated once they’ve clicked on Share.
8Enter Access Code on other PC
Step 8: Enter that into the Access Code window that appears once you select Access on your end.
9Access PC via Other PC
Step 9: You’re connected! You can either control the remote mouse from your own PC if your connection is fast enough and you find the program to respond in time, or have your friend/relative control the mouse on theirs, under your expert direction.

Once you’ve done what you need to do, all that’s left is to disconnect, which is done by clicking the Disconnect button.

And that’s all there is to it. You won’t believe how many times remote control apps have saved my bacon over the years, especially when providing tech support for people who couldn’t (or wouldn’t) read the screen to answer my  questions. It’s a new experience for me doing everything right from within my browser, but it certainly makes the entire process pretty easy.

I hope you get good use out of it, and if you have any questions or observations about the process please don’t hesitate to post them in the comments.
