EA to offer refunds on digital purchases

In a very un-EA-like move, EA is now offering refunds on digital games purchased on its Origin service.

It was announced yesterday on the Origin website that “You may return EA full game downloads (PC or Mac) purchased on Origin for a full refund–within 24 hours after you first launch the game, within seven days from when you purchased it, or within the first seven days after the game’s release date if you pre-ordered it (whichever of these conditions happens first).”

That means you essentially get a 24-hour window in which to play the game and decide if you like it or not. Even though 24 hours doesn’t sound like a lot, it’s much better than nothing at all.

This news doesn’t apply to physical boxed games, however, so don’t get excited and think you can rush back to BT Games with your newly-purchased copy of SimCity and expect to get your money back.

This comes as a pleasant surprise from a company that has long been accused of anti-consumer behaviour, and seems to indicate EA is genuinely willing to change in order to satisfy its customers. ZOMG.

Not even Steam, Valve’s digital distribution platform that PC gamers hold in such high esteeem offers such a progressive refund programme. This could have huge ramifications for digital content distribution platforms everywhere.

Of course, this being EA they might announce a baby-eating programme next week in case we start to think they’re getting soft.
