Ready your cameras: Wiki Loves Monuments photography competition returns to South Africa

According to Memeburn, South Africa will again host a local version of the Wiki Loves Monuments photo contest. The project, a Wikimedia initiative, aims to use en-masse photography to digitise South Africa’s famous landmarks for posterity. It’s also recognised by the Guinness Book of World Records as the largest photo competition on the planet.

Participants are urged to submit their photos, taken using regular cameras or camera phones, of South Africa’s heritage sites, such as buildings, statues, shipwrecks, and famous landmarks. It just so happens that the contest will run for the entirety of September, which is considered heritage month in South Africa. There’s even a handy guide to help you determine how precious heritage sites are – all 3 614 of them.

For an idea of what was submitted by locals last year,  check out this gallery. If that’s not enough inspiration, maybe the prize money will be. The first-place winner will receive R7 500 in vouchers for photography equipment, while second and third place winners will receive R4 000 and R2 500 in vouchers, respectively. There’s also a prize for the person who submits the highest number of (relevant) photos: a voucher of R3 000 for camera kit.

To submit snaps, just use the wizard on the Wiki Loves Monuments page, or use the Android app for submitting pics from your phone or tablet. Only entries submitted during the month of September are valid, so don’t go around taking photos and uploading things just yet.
