Microsoft branded smartphones are the future

The terms of the deal between Microsoft and Nokia have been made available and one thing is now clear, there will be no more Nokia branded Windows Phones made by Microsoft.

In the terms of the sale of Nokia’s devices and services division to Microsoft, the ‘Softies’ will be able to use the Nokia branding on devices “based on the Series 30 and Series 40 operating systems” for the next 10 years and all current Nokia mobile phone products. Those devices include feature phones under the Asha brand which Microsoft will acquire but not the Lumia brand. This means that from the moment the sale closes we should all get used to the phrase ‘Microsoft Surface Phone’.

We may not have seen the last of Nokia’s name on smartphones though, the agreement stops Nokia from making mobile devices under the Nokia brand until the end of 2015 and from licencing the Nokia brand on any mobile devices for a period of 30 months. Which means from 2016 onwards Nokia could potentially start making their own devices again and 2 and a half years after the agreement with Microsoft is signed a company like Huawei for instance could make phones with Nokia branding on them (after paying licence fees to Nokia of course).
