New Apps for Chrome on its birthday

Google Chrome celebrates its birthday, this week, and to mark the occasion the big G is giving Chrome a few new features.

On the Chrome Web Store, in a new section entitled For Your Desktop (Windows and Chromebook only, at the moment), there are apps that will empower Google’s dominant browser.

The new Chrome apps architecture will enable a new generation of apps for the browser. Highlights, from the selection posted by Google, include an offline mode for accessing apps and data while not connected to the web; seamless access to Google Drive; a built-in notification centre; the ability for apps to interact with USB devices, such as cameras; and the ability to launch apps directly from your desktop.

While apps aren’t anything new for Chrome, the latest updates will ensure that compatible apps are just as good as their desktop counterparts. Slowly, but surely, Google is making regular software more redundant, offering users the ability to access their data and favourite application from a web browser on any computer: an that makes its internet-based Chromebooks a more enticing proposition.
