Valve testing a new “Family Sharing” option that lets you share your Steam games

Steam, Valve’s popular digital content distribution platform, occupies a special place in the hearts of PC gamers. The service is constantly evolving and adopting new features that make PC gaming just that much better; recent changes have included giving gamers early access to games that are not yet ready for release, at a less-than-full price. This gives the developers the benefit of pre-release feedback, and gamers get cheaper games.

The latest new feature is a doozy, one that a lot of people are absolutely going to love. Remember when the Xbox One was first announced, and Microsoft talked about a “Family Sharing Plan” that would allow gamers to share their library of games with friends and family? And how disappointed some gamers were when Microsoft did their infamous 180 and nixed the feature? Well, Valve is developing its own version of the “Family Sharing Plan” for Steam, called… drum roll… “Steam Family Sharing” that will essentially allow you to do exactly that, but with your Steam library.

Yes. Valve is planning to let you share your PC games. I’ll give you a moment to let that sink in.

Cool, right? Here’s the idea summed up in a paragraph taken from Steam’s SFS announcement page:

Steam Family Sharing allows close friends and family members to play one another’s games while earning their own Steam achievements and saving their own game progress to the Steam cloud. It’s all enabled by authorizing a shared computer.

The whole thing is not ready for prime time yet, though. Steam will be running a beta program soon for select Steam users, and if you’re interested in participating you’re invited to join the Family Sharing Group and let Valve know that you want to take part.
