The iPhone 5S fingerprint reader beaten by tech from 2004

Much has been made of the Touch ID fingerprint reader that features prominently in the new iPhone 5S. According to Apple’s website Touch ID is ‘a convenient and highly secure way to access your phone”, we’ll agree to the convenient part of that statement, but as we found out from BoingBoing editor Cory Doctorow, biometric security is a fundamentally flawed method for keeping things secure.

Kudos must go to a hacker with the nickname Starbug at Chaos Computer Club (who Cory mentions in the video at the above link). Starbug used a process that the CCC wrote about in 2004 and just cranked up the resolution of the fake fingerprint to beat the new Touch ID sensor.
