Hover over here: Microsoft’s classic game comes to web browsers

Hands up, those of you old enough to remember Hover, the game that shipped on CD ROM versions of Windows 95. That’s going back around 18 years, so you’re forgiven if you don’t vividly recall playing the game.

In either case, get ready for a reboot: Microsoft has developed and released a browser-based version of Hover, replete with modern graphics and a multiplayer mode. While the 1995 version required you to have a CD ROM drive – a luxury item in those days, the new version just means you need a browser that supports WebGL. Which is pretty much all of them. It’s part of Microsoft’s push to show that the latest versions of Internet Explorer are good browsers, too, and follows on from its web-based version of popular mobile game, Cut The Rope.

The physics-based game lets you take control of a futuristic hovercraft, and then you’re set on a level to collect flags before opposing players do. It’s more difficult than it sounds: ask anybody who’s played Hover before, or tried to pilot an actual hovercraft.
