New app makes iPhone 5S slow-mo videos actually useful

Got yourself a grey import iPhone 5S, and enjoying its new features? How about that slow-motion video camera?

As we mentioned in our review, slow-mo videos shot on Apple’s latest phone need special treatment, and you can’t upload slow clips from the phone itself. Well, until now – thanks to a Reddit user who’s coded a free app.

TruSloMo, which costs all of nothing, will take all the high frame-rate videos shot on your iPhone 5S and export them to the phone, so that you can upload them to other services. It’s a quick process – a 30 second clip takes only about 10 seconds to export – and then you can finally share your time-warped adventures on YouTube or Instagram.

The slow-motion video feature on the 5S lets users capture footage at 120 frames per second and then play it back at 30 frames per second. This effectively slows down the footage to a quarter speed, giving almost a Mythbusters-esque feeling to those video clips. You won’t quite see the individual beats of a hummingbird’s wings, but you can capture your friend falling off his bike and landing on his face.

The iPhone 5S isn’t officially available in South Africa, but that hasn’t stopped a few online stores from offering it anyway, albeit for quite a large markup. Those lucky enough to get their hands on Apple’s latest will likely enjoy the fingerprint reader, the newfound speed, and the greatly improved camera. And now, they’ll also be able to use those slow-motion video clips.
