Map Monday: False buildings and fake plane crashes

Sometimes, not everything is as it seems. While we’re not alluding to something like The Matrix, where our present consciousness is actually the fabrication of some future robot master race, there are some real-world illusions that are fooling us.

Thanks to the guys at Google Sightseeing, we have a few examples, too.

There’s this petrol station, in a suburb in California. Except, it’s not a petrol station, but the house of an enthusiast. Yup, a house with a 50s diner and fake petrol pumps.

This house? Real. But the waterfall is fabricated. And so is the cave the house is built on.

To most, this looks like a nasty plane crash. But while the morbidly curious try finding bodies in the imagery, the rest of us can pan around and see other film sets in Universal Studio’s Hollywood lot.

Even this innocuous row of houses can not be taken at face value. Residents of Leinster Gardens, in London, might know about it – but to regular folks this is just a lot of similar-looking houses. But zoom out to satellite view and see what’s in store. There’s a facade there, designed to disguise a set of railroad tracks.
