Grafitti artists fight amid dinosaurs at Sci-Bono Centre

The organisers of the annual Night of 1000Drawings have just confirmed the venue for this year’s event, which will be at the Sci-Bono Discovery Centre in Newtown, Johannesburg on 7th November at 6pm. It’s sounds like an insanely fun night, in which 1 000 drawings will go on sale to raise money for the homeless charity Paballo.

Anyone can submit any artwork for the event, so long as it’s created on something the size of a piece of A4 paper. And there’s prizes and judging on the night to ascertain the best. All drawings are sold at a flat rate, so you might end up with a masterpiece by a famous local artist for next to nothing.

The main focus, however, is on fun. And in amongst Sci-Bono’s many displays – which includes a section full of cool games and a load of animatronic dinosaurs – there’ll be four live acts performing music, a ‘Doodle Battle’ for those who haven’t yet sated their desire to sketch. There’s also a plan in place to get local graffiti artists to face off in fast drawing fury too.

As well as Paballo, proceeds from the night will go to funding Mmabana, a Zambian charity for the homeless, and Intuthuko Embroideries, which trains women from the Etwatwa area near Springs in sewing and business skills. According to the 1000Drawings press release, Intuthuko members have been hit hard by the closure of Rosebank African Market, where many of their products were sold.

Dinosaurs, art and doing good? How can we resist?
