Inventor of digital laser to speak at TEDxSoweto

Word in from the TEDxSoweto organisers: the line-up for this year’s event has been confirmed and published over here. It’s a particularly diverse mix and – dare we say it – possibly even better than the one for TEDxJohannesburg earlier in the year. The headline has to be Sandile Ngcobo, a scientist with the CSIR who won international acclaim last month for inventing the first digital laser as part of his PhD project.

You know, as you do.

Other speakers include poet Makhafula Vilakazi, the founder of Vuyo‘s Miles Kubheka and trailblazers Tshepo and Thoba Sithole-Modisane, who were the first gay couple to be married in a traditional ceremony in KZN. Friend of htxt.africa and correspondent for our sister site, GirlGuides, Pippa Tshabalala will also be speaking about women and videogames in South Africa. Diary of a Zulu Girl creator Mike Maphoto will also be giving a talk, but I suspect it will be founder of medical charity Amani Global Works, Dr Jacques Sebisaho, who’s likely to be the talking point of the show. On account of him being a proper hero and everything with a lot of stories to tell.

Want to go along? TEDxSoweto is this Saturday 2nd November at the Soweto Theatre, and tickets are R500 with discounts for NGOs and students – book here.
