BlackBerry still accounts for 14% of mobile data in Africa

We’re being bombarded with internet stat-gasm press releases ahead of tomorrow’s Africa Com convention in Cape Town – an annual jamboree for telecoms and IT firms operating on the continent. The most interesting one to catch our eye so far today hearks from analysts at Sandvine, who have put together usage stats on mobile data across the continent.

According to its report, Global Internet Phenomena, Blackberry services are second only to web browsing in terms of the amount of data used on mobile networks, accounting for 13.99% of all traffic. The next nearest single commercial service is YouTube, which makes up just 2.9%.  Significantly, Windows’ update service is the next most used service, at 2.77% of all traffic, while Google Play follows closely behind that.

The stats are a bit vague to read much in to  – there’s no break down of traffic by country and fixed line broadband isn’t mentioned at all, and the stats only come from the 20 networks Sandvine works with. Plus, line items like WAP and SSL could cover anything at all from Mixit to mobile banking. But for reference, BlackBerry isn’t even mentioned in the top ten list for Europe.

We’ll be keeping a close eye on whether or not those BlackBerry stats change in the next report, due in six months’ time.
