R150 shopping list: A list of must-have apps and games for iOS

Just over a month ago iTunes gift cards went on sale in South Africa. Besides being a commitment from Apple that it takes the local market seriously, it also lets local users access the iTunes Music and App stores, as well as the Mac App Store, without needing a credit card. It’s still an issue for some people to type their credit card details in online, especially given the constant exposure to horror stories that involve online fraud, identity theft, and hacks.

Not only that, gift cards can be given as, well, gifts. And, as we recently pointed out, R150 on iTunes goes a bit further than R150 in a CD store. It’s also a great way to control allowances. More and more children have access to iPhones and iPads, but it would be ill advised to leave in their hands a device that has a credit card associated with it. Gift cards solve that problem.

The gift cards, available in R150, R250, and R450 denominations, and using them is dead simple. The code on the back of the card is entered into iTunes (on your computer, iPad, or iPhone) and your Apple ID is loaded with the amount of money the card is worth.

Shortly after the cards became available Apple also announced that games would be made  available in the local iTunes App Store. For many this meant finally abandoning their international iTunes account – the local store finally offers almost everything people want. With that in mind, we decided to take a minimum allowance – R150 – and go shopping for the best apps and games on the iTunes store

1) Angry Birds – R7.99

Every iPhone needs Angry Birds. It’s not a matter of if you’ll play the game, but rather when you’ll be bored and wishing you had something simple to play – just like the Snake game that shipped on old Nokia phones.

2) Camera+ – R15.99

The best third-party camera app we’ve used. Camera+ gives you a handful of options for customising the way your capture photos, from its adjustable light metering and white balance to a readout for the current shutter and ISO values – though those aren’t customisable. It also has a burst mode, timer, and stabiliser. Then, when you have your snaps, you can customise them with its built-in filters.

3) Air Video HD – R24.99

You’re lying in bed or sitting on the patio, but your movies are on your home computer. No fret – Air Video will let you stream the content on your PC or Mac, no matter what format, without a complicated setup process. It’s even possible to copy your converted video files to your iPhone or iPad, across a wireless network.

4) Knock – R32.99

We originally wrote about Knock a week ago, but this little app has proven very handy. It lets you lock your computer with a secure password – as you would, anyway – but then allows you to unlock your computer by simply knocking your phone twice. It’s a huge convenience; though it only works with Macs at the moment, and not Windows computers.

5) Snailboy – R15.99

Another fantastic way to while away those hours in waiting rooms and long queues, except this time the entertainment is home grown. Like Angry Birds, Snailboy is a physics puzzle game that you can master in a few swipes and enjoy for hours on end.

6) Star Walk – R24.99

Ever look up in awe at the stars in the night sky? Well, then you’ll love Star Walk. This is the app that’ll teach you about those great big balls of gas burning billions of miles away. Simply point your iPhone camera at the Milky Way and Star Walk will let you see the names of constellations, star systems, and planets.

7) The Converted – R24.99

If there’s one thing Apple missed with the default apps on the iPhone, it’s a good unit converter. Thankfully, The Converted fills that gap perfectly. Its gorgeous design looks like something Apple would pull off, and then there’s the plethora of conversion options, ranging from distance and weight, to currencies and temperatures.
