Microsoft’s Xbox One goes on sale in 13 countries

The 22nd of November has finally rolled around, but this year it will be remembered more for the launch of Microsoft’s Xbox One gaming console than being the anniversary of John F. Kennedy’s assassination back in 1963. Well, certainly in households where gaming is more important than history, and definitely in the homes of the Australians and New Zealanders who attended the launch parties held by Microsoft in those countries.

New Zealand was the first place on Earth the Xbox One officially went on sale owing to the fact that it reached November 22nd before anywhere else. According to Xbox.com, the first New Zealander to get an Xbox One was Daniel Livingstone. He got the much-desired Xbox One that had been at the bottom of the shark tank at Kelly Tarlton’s SEA LIFE Aquarium in Auckland for safe-keeping.

Ecstatic Australian gamers were the next to collect their consoles at a lavish launch event held opposite the Sydney Opera House and Sydney Harbour. Francis King and Angela Tran were the first Australians to get an Xbox One, which is only fitting as they had pre-ordered theirs two years ago.

This is the full list of countries where the Xbox One launched a few hours ago:

  • Australia
  • Austria
  • Brazil
  • Canada
  • France
  • Germany
  • Ireland
  • Italy
  • Mexico
  • New Zealand
  • Spain
  • United Kingdom
  • United States

Select European will be next on the 29th of November, with the notable exceptions of eight countries who will only be getting the Xbox One in 2014, just like South Africa. Gamers in Belgium, Denmark, Finland, The Netherlands, Norway, Russia, Sweden and Switzerland will be joining us in gnashing our teeth at the wait, or, as is more likely, they’ll just import their own consoles from one of the launch countries instead especially as Microsoft still isn’t saying when, exactly, the 2014 launch will take place.
