Forget PC board, draw circuits on paper with a pen

New on the Kickstarter scene is Circuit Scribe, a regular looking roller ball pen filled with conductive silver ink that allows you to draw electrical circuits on regular paper. Circuit Scribe is the brain child of a spin off company of  scientists from the University of Illinois who are looking to revolutionise the way children are taught about electricity at school. They describe Circuit Scribe as “made for project based learning. (so that) Kids can build circuits and switches in their notebooks and use those concepts to get creative!”. As of this morning the project has been officially funded and is currently sitting at over $250 000 of their initial $85 000 goal.

It’s not just for kids though with a version of the kit available for both the ‘maker’ crowd and the developer kit for the more serious electronics tinkerer. Each circuit Scribe pen costs $20 (R200) and comes with a small LED light component, but kits containing some basic electronics can be bought for as little as $30 (R300) all the way to the $100 developer kits that help integrate projects with Arduino and Raspberry Pi. Because of the open source nature of hardware project like Arduino Circuit Scribe can easily be used to create circuits to test designs out before you ever have to solder a wire into place.

You can keep track of the Circuit Scribe project on the Kickstarter page and can even contribute to it, just remember that there is $15 (R150) charge for shipping outside of the US.
