South African made animated short movie BIG GAME is awesome

78 290 views in 24 hours, that’s how many views the animated short movie ‘BIG GAME’ had on its first day on Vimeo. Impressive right? Even more so when you consider that the project was created by 6 students from The Animation School in Cape Town and took just “8 sleepless months”. Still not convinced? Consider this, last year’s 10th most viewed video on YouTube in South Africa was the security camera footage of the epic hail storm in Johannesburg entitled “The Perfect Hail Storm” which to date has had just shy of 200 000 views.

BIG GAME follows the story of Bobo, a monster who is unable to make friends with the creatures of the forest because of his razor sharp teeth and hulking appearance. Bobo is about to spend his birthday alone until a hunter throws him a surprise party.

The Animation School has campuses in both Joburg and Cape Town and offers a 3-year full time diploma that gives its students an diploma with certificates for Hollywood-industry standard software. They seem to be doing a great job with both current and former students garnering awards in SA and abroad. Our sister site, Girl Guides, recently interviewed one of the students who worked on the project, Sarah Scrimgeour, who chatted with them about her thoughts on learning animation in South Africa.
