Banging faulty Xbox Ones fixes disc drive problem

Since the launch of the Xbox One last Friday, it has emerged that some consoles have shipped with faulty disc drives (this particular story from Metro.co.uk). When games are inserted, the drive makes an unpleasant grinding sound, and games can’t be read.

Microsoft has acknowledged the problem, and has promised all Xbox One owners with faulty drives a free launch game to make up for the inconvenience of having their brand-new console replaced. They also mentioned that the problem is only affecting a very small number of Xbox Ones.

Gamers can choose between Ryse: Son of Rome, Dead Rising 3, Forza Motorsport 5 and Zoo Tycoon. Since all of these games can be downloaded from Xbox Live, gamers won’t need to use their disc drives to play, giving them something to do while they await their replacement units.

Since the discovery of the problem, a fix for the problem has been found. Interestingly, it involves giving the console a good few thwacks which apparently jostles a loose gear back into place and allows the drive to work as expected. It’s not a recommended fix and may void the console’s warranty, but it’s at least an option.

YouTube user dave d posted a video on Monday showing his own faulty Xbox One, how he administered the fix and how the console went from making grinding noises when a disc was inserted to reading his copy of Battlefield 4 just fine.

Once again, it’s looking like not such a bad thing that South Africa is way behind everyone else when it comes to new console launches, because hopefully we won’t have to deal with this sort of thing when we finally get the Xbox One sometime next year.
