Goodbye Metro, hello desktop: Windows 9 could fix Windows 8

Hate, hate, hate Windows 8? The signs afoot that Microsoft may be taking on board criticism of its much maligned new operating system with reports that Windows 9 will undo many of the unpopular changes that the Metro interface brought.

We know that Windows 8 is not everyone’s favourite operating system, in fact there is a rather large crowd of folks who will use the word hate when the topic comes up. It stems from Microsoft’s radical change to the ‘New UI’, formerly known as Metro, which replaced the ‘Start’ button. The new OS saw users being directed to a tablet style ‘Start’ screen which housed all of their apps and a host of constantly updating ‘Live tiles’.

Confused and unhappy users who were accustomed to the traditional desktop interface of the past poured out their frustrations on the web and, after pressure from the masses, Microsoft brought the ‘Start’ button back in Windows 8.1 update. Unfortunately the implementation was not what many users had hoped for.It looks like Microsoft has realised the error of its ways and will be making some serious changes in an update known as “Threshold” which may very well turn into Windows 9 in 2015.

According to the internet’s most reliable source for all Microsoft info, the duo of  Paul Thurrott and Mary Jo Foley, Windows 9 will see both “the return of the Start menu and the ability to run Metro-style apps on the desktop alongside desktop applications.” Both of them state that the roadmap will be made apparent at the company’s annual Build conference in April and that it will include a service pack style update to Windows 8.1 in the same month.

If 2015 seems an eternity away and you simply detest the Windows 8 experience there are solutions available to you. Start8 from Stardock lets you bring back the traditional Start menu as well as disable any of the new features of Windows 8 that you don’t like. The innovative Pokki meanwhile, is an even further makeover of the Start menu and well worth checking out.
