Expect something Ubuntu flavoured at Mobile World Congress

Mark Shuttleworth’s Canonical has confirmed that they will be at the annual Mobile World Congress (MWC) event in Barcelona at the end of next month to show off the Ubuntu OS in all its glory. Last year Canonical used MWC as a springboard to launch Ubuntu for tablets and smartphones so they’re no stranger to announcing big things at the event.

Ubuntu Phone has been steadily picking up momentum over the last year with local operator MTN even joining the Carrier Advisory Group for Ubuntu Phone which would give it the rights to be one of the first operators in the world to carry Ubuntu handsets when they launch.

Shuttleworth was also involved in the effort to get the world’s most expensive Kickstarter off the ground with the Ubuntu Edge campaign. Essentially a R324 million request for people to buy an untested phone with some of the best hardware available on the market running the Ubuntu Phone OS. While it may have failed spectacularly, it did give us some insight into the ideas that Canonical has for the Ubuntu Phone platform.

While we don’t expect an Ubuntu Edge sized announcement at MWC, we will most definitely be heading across to the Ubuntu booth to find out what’s what in the land of the other Linux based phone OS.
