Tech, art, and music: XooXity could be SXSW South Africa

Imagine a place where you could check out all kinds of new technology – including concept gadgets and apps, as well as technology startups – alongside fresh live acts, and art exhibitions.

To many Americans that’s not something they have to imagine – it’s a place they can go to. Every year in Austin, Texas, the SXSW (South by South West) festival is held, bringing together tech talent, smart people, and creative geniuses to share their thoughts and show off their ideas. Now, XooXity – say Zoo City; yes, inspired by Lauren Beukes’ sci-fi bestseller – wants to have something similar right here in South Africa.

It’s partnered up with the established technology conference, Tech4Africa, and plans to have two XooXity festivals in SA. One for Cape Town, and one for Johannesburg. Well, technically the Cape Town event is a “pre party”, held on the 1st of May, while the actual event held in Johannesburg will take place on the 3rd of May (which is the second day of the Tech4Africa conference). The venue is Mary Fitzgerald Square, in Newtown, Johannesburg.

So far, some of the confirmed artists include Bittereinder, DJ Fresh, and Sibot & Toyota. The XooXity page also notes that more acts will be added.

XooXity tickets for the festival go on sale on the 28th of February, for R1 000, so best write that down in your calendar if you don’t want to miss out.
