Edward Snowden nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize

Former National Security Agency contractor, Edward Snowden, has been nominated by two Socialist Left party politicians for a Nobel Peace Prize.

In a letter submitted to the Norwegian Nobel Committee requesting that Snowden be considered for the award, Baard Vegar Solhjell and Snorre Valen praised Snowden for revealing the “nature and technological prowess of modern surveillance”, although they said they did not necessarily approve of his disclosure tactics.

“The level of sophistication and depth of surveillance that citizens all over the world are subject to have stunned us, and stirred debate,” Solhejl andValen said in their nomination letter. “Snowden’s actions have led to the reintroduction of trust and transparency as a leading principle in global security policies”.

This is not the first time Snowden has been nominated for a Peace Prize. Swedish sociology professor, Stefan Svallfors, had nominated him in July last year but the nomination could not be considered as the deadline date for submissions had already passed. This year’s submissions close on February 1st.
