Ten years ago, the biggest social network on the planet, Facebook, made its debut as a small chatroom for Harvard students.Today, it now has over 1 billion active monthly users.
To celebrate its birthday, Facebook is also giving users a way to relive the years gone by on their profile with a feature called Look Back, where you can watch a personalized movie, view a collection of your top photos, or read a “thank you” card from the company.
In the meantime, here’s a look back at the social network’s biggest milestones and how it’s web look has changed over the past decade.
2004
- February 4th: Mark Zuckerberg and co-founders Dustin Moskovitz, Chris Hughes and Eduardo Saverin launch ‘The Facebook’, a chatroom for Harvard University students
- March: The Facebook expands to more colleges and universities around America.
- September: The Facebook launches the Wall, where students can post messages to their friends.
- December: The Facebook reaches 1 million users.
2005
- September 20th: The Facebook drops “The’ from its name to become known as just “Facebook”
- September: High school networks are added, allowing high school students to use the social network.
- October: International school networks are added to Facebook and photos can now be uploaded and shared on users’ profiles.
- December: Facebook reaches 6 million users
2006
- April: Facebook mobile launches.
- September 5th: Facebook News and Mini-Feed make their debut.
- September 26th: Facebook becomes open for anyone to join.
- December: Facebook doubles its users to 12 million.
2007
- June 2007: Facebook Video launches.
- December 2007: Facebook reaches 58 million users.

- March 11th: New Facebook home page launches.
- December: Facebook reaches 360 million users.
2010
- December 2010: Facebook reaches 608 million users.
2011
- November 6th, 2011: Facebook reaches 845 million users
2012
- April 9th: Facebook acquires Instagram.
- May 18th: Facebook holds its initial public offering at $26.81 per share.
- October 4th: Facebook reaches over 1 billion users.
