Sony’s new app imports data and apps from an iPhone

Sony has just made it a whole lot easier for anyone to switch to using one of its Xperia smartphones. The new Xperia Transfer Mobile app will pull almost all of the information from your old Android smartphone or even an iPhone into your new Xperia phone.

The Xperia Transfer Mobile app connects to your old phone via WiFi and can even, in the case of Android phones, be paired using NFC. It then seeks out and copies across all of your existing contacts, calendar entries, SMS and MMS messages, browser bookmarks, notes, photos, music and videos onto any of Sony’s new Xperia smartphone running Android 4.3 or above.

Xperia Transfer Mobil is an update to Sony’s first attempt at a data transfer app which required either the Xperia PC Companion or Bridge for Mac software to handle the data transfer. What’s truly impressive with the new version is that the Xperia Transfer Mobile app now has the ability to hunt down iOS apps from the old phone in the Google Play store and install them onto your new phone for you. In the case of the same app being unavailable the Xperia Transfer app will suggest the corresponding app or a similar app from Google Play store ensuring a near painless transition from any device onto Sony’s platform.

Unfortunately the app transfer functionality isn’t available from other Android devices but since both devices should be logged in to your Google account it’s just a matter of selecting them from the list of your apps in the Google Play store.

The Xperia Transfer Mobile app is already available for download.
