Twitter banned from Pistorius court

There’ll be a brief respite from Twitter-based coverage of the Oscar Pistorius trial today as Judge Thokozile Masipa has banned all forms of live broadcast while pathologist Professor Gert Saayman gives evidence.

Saayman has been called as a witness for the state will be testifying about the post-mortem examination of Reeva Steenkamp’s. He requested that broadcasts of his testimony be halted in order to “preserve the dignity of the deceased”. Both the defence and prosecution agreed with Saayman’s request, but the court was adjourned to hear objections from the media.

According to the South African Press Association, Judge Masipa agreed with the witness, and has banned not only video and audio reportage from the court but specifically mentioned Twitter as being proscribed for the time being too.

//Update

Guardian journalist David Smith mentioned in a Tweet that the ban extends to live blogging as well as Twitter. However it seems that journalists are still reporting what’s going on the court away from Saayman’s testimony.
