Assassin’s Creed getting a next-gen only release

Screenshots from the next Assassin’s Creed game were leaked by gaming site Kotaku last week. Shortly afterwards it was confirmed by the game’s publisher, Ubisoft: it’s going to be subtitled “Unity”, it will be set (at least partly) during the French Revolution and it’s currently in development for PC, Xbox One and PlayStation 4.

That means it’s next-gen only, but Kotaku says with that comes the opportunity to develop strictly for those platforms and not devote any resources to cross-platform development or compromising on the technical vision for the game, which is a good thing.

For those of you with Xbox 360s and PlayStation 3s, don’t worry because Ubisoft is also rumoured to have an entirely separate previous-gen Assassin’s Creed in development. IGN’s Assassin’s Creed wiki says it’s currently code-named “Comet”, it’s expected sometime in 2014, but Ubisoft hasn’t made anything official as yet.

Since there are over 160 million Xbox 360s and PlayStation 3s in the world, offering far higher potential profits than the less-than-10-million install base of the two new consoles, it makes no business sense for Ubisoft to ignore those older platforms.

Is Assassin’s Creed getting a bit long-in-the-tooth, and do you think having two side-by-side releases later this year is a good or a bad thing? Let us know in the comments/the forum.

Lastly, check out the teaser video Ubisoft released alongside Unity’s announcement. Those are some pretty tasty graphics right there.
