Cape Town scoops Earth Hour City award

Tomorrow, March 29th, marks the 7th annual WWF Earth Hour, where everyone around the world is encouraged to turn of their lights for 1 hour between 20:30 and 21:30 local time, in a bid to highlight energy conservation and sustainable living.

Each year, cities around the world are selected to represent their countries in the Earth Hour City Challenge for sustainable city management. This year, Cape Town was selected as South Africa’s Earth Hour City and competed with 32 other cities for the title of worldwide Earth Hour City. Cape Town announced today that the WWF has awarded the city the title of Earth Hour City of 2014.

“This accolade is a prestigious honour that recognises the city’s innovative actions on climate change and its dedication to pursuing the goal of a sustainable urban environment,” the City of Cape Town says on its site.

As one of the Earth Hour City finalists, the City of Cape Town will be switching off the lights in its own buildings and on Table Mountain. The city will also be hosting an awareness-raising event at the V&A Waterfront, featuring the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra, to promote electricity savings, the reduction of carbon emissions and to encourage people to live lightly on the planet.
