Artists unleashed: Top 5 creativity apps

Many of us are creative by nature, and since so many us now own cell phones and tablets, it is only natural that we’d start to create using them. Here are five apps that will help unleash your inner artist, wherever you happen to be.

Adobe Photoshop Touch

R109.99

Photoshop Touch

Photoshop is so ubiquitous that it’s been turned into a verb. You don’t edit photos anymore, you Photoshop them. At least, that’s what the internet says. This app offers a lot of what the full desktop version does, except the interface has been tweaked to be touch-friendly, first and foremost, so you can use it on your tablet and phone. If you only want one image editor, and you want the one with the most features, this is the app to buy.

ArtRage

R32.99

ArtRage

ArtRage isn’t your average painting app – it treats each stroke like a real paintbrush, going so far as to track exactly how much paint is on your “brush”, how wet your canvas is and other realistic elements of painting, and then simulating the effects on-screen. For example, you can smear really thick lines of paint with the app’s virtual palette knife, just like you would in real life. As the official blurb says, ” It’s not just a special effect, it’s a live simulation of the properties of real paint.”.

GarageBand

Free

Garageband

Even though Garageband isn’t the newest app out there, it’s still one of the best for jamming with virtual instruments – a guitar, organ, drums and keyboard – and recording the music you and your band make for real with its music studio functionality. You can even plug in real instruments, and have Garageband add effects and amplifiers not easily accessible when going the traditional route.

Paperless

R22.25

Paperless

Paperless is an app for sketchers. It lets you sketch and paint with a wide variety of materials, including water colours, pencil, brushes and even feathers. Draw as accurately as you’d like with customisable settings like line thickness, opacity and smoothing. Since sharing is where it’s at these days, Paperless will also let you post your creations to Facebook so friends can check out your mad drawing skillz.

Fresco Paint Pro

R35.94

Fresco Paint Pro

Fresco is fantastic for drawing, sketching and painting when you’re on the move. It has tons of brushes, filters, and effects, and it has many layers to work with. Best of all, you can export your work to Photoshop for further editing so you’re free to start your project on your tablet or phone, and then move seamlessly across to your full-powered PC to touch it up in a slightly more comfortable environment.
