Android Camera App

Google’s new Android camera app now has ‘lens blur’

Got yourself a smartphone running the latest 4.4-flavoured version of the Android operating system? Well then, Google’s new camera app will give you the photography experience of a Nexus style phone without having to strip off the operating system to do so.

The new Google camera app is replete with ‘lens blur’, panorama, ‘photosphere’ and video camera modes in additions to a plain old camera mode for those wanting to just take a photo. The lens blur feature is the newest of the bunch and adds in the SLR camera-like ability to take shallow depth of field photos, where the subject of the photo is in focus and the background is blurred out. It’s an effect similar to what you would get out of Nokia’s refocus camera app.

Most Android users, save those who have had the chance to use Nexus devices, have never seen the stock Android camera but for those of us (un)fortunate enough to have had the opportunity to use it we can attest to the fact that the new app is a major upgrade in almost every regard.

Removing the camera app from the OS has been a part of Google’s plans to get around the fact that most Android manufacturers fail to update the operating system of all of their smartphones and tablets regularly. In recent years Google has removed major components of the Android OS from the system update cycle and adding them as standalone apps in the Google Play store. The camera is now one feature in a long list including the calendar, Gmail and the Chrome browser that all exist outside of the main Android installation.

The new Google Camera app is available in the Google Play store right now for smartphones and tablets running Android 4.4 and above.
