WhatsApp reaches 500 million active users

Whatever formula Facebook uses to grow the social media companies it buys, it’s working well. Last month, Instagram announced it had double it’s number of active users in just over a year and now WhatsApp, which was bought for $19 billion by Facebook in February, has announced that it now has 500 million active users.

In December, the instant messaging service was sitting at just 100 million active users, meaning it’s racked up 400 million users in just four months. WhatsApp has also revealed that 700 million photos and 100 million videos are being shared between users everyday.

“In the last few months, we’ve grown fastest in countries like Brazil, India, Mexico, and Russia,” WhatsApp says on its company blog. “We could go on, but for now, it’s more important that we get back to work – because here at WhatsApp, we’re just getting started.”
