Uber offers free rides for voters on Wednesday

Want to vote but can’t get to the polling station? You could wait for a political party to send round a taxi and a R1 000 ‘incentive’ to tick their box, or you could preserve your independence and take car hire firm Uber up on this awesome special offer it’s just announced:  it’s offering free rides to and from the polling station of your choice on Wednesday.

New and existing Uber users are both eligible for the offer, all you need to do is download the app to your phone and use the promotional code “VOTESA” in the appropriate box. A smartly turned out driver in a well maintained hire care will turn up at your door and whisk you away to exercise your democratic rights.

There’s a couple of catches: this offer is limited to Joburg only [UPDATE: Uber is offering free rides in all three of its active cities in SA, so those in Jozi, Cape Town and Durbs can ride for free on election day] and the value of the ride must be less than R200 for each of the two trips. The biggest issue, of course, is that the offer is likely to overwhelm Uber’s current driver capacity by some way – so there’s no guarantee a car will be available exactly when you want it.

On the other hand, it runs from 7am-9pm and is worth trying a few times to see if you get through.
