Intel promises new, better processors before Christmas

If you thought things couldn’t get any better for notebook users then you better hold onto your hat because Intel has promised that its next generation Broadwell processors will be here before the end of the year.

Last year Intel released its current generation of processors, code-named Haswell, which brought with it two major improvements. The first was vastly improved graphics capabilities, the second, and most important for the majority of consumers, was a substantial increase in battery life.

Broadwell is the die shrink of Haswell which means that while the overall design of the chips will stay the same the size of each individual transistor that make up the chip, 1.4 billion of them in total, will shrink from 22 nanometres down to 14 nanometres. Smaller transistors bring a host of benefits to processors including further benefits in power consumption and more processing power by virtue of the fact that more of them can fit on the same sized chip.

What this means for you is that laptops you buy with Broadwell chips powering them will last longer and be able to do more than notebooks have ever been able to do in the past.
