DOTA 2 online competition prize pool hits R80m

This year’s DOTA 2 championship, The International 2014, has a prize pool of over R80 million that’s growing with every passing day.

That’s because its initial prize of $1.6million (R16 million) grows by $2.50 (R25) every time someone buys The Compendium, which DOTA2.com calls “a virtual booklet that contains dozens of ways to interact with the year’s biggest DOTA 2 tournament”.

The Compendium costs $10 (R100), and players can “level it up” by using it to watch games, make predictions, collect player cards and other activities during the competition.

As a result, The International 2014 will effectively offer crowd-sourced prize money. This year’s pool already dwarfs that of last year’s event, which raised just $2.8 million (R28 million) for prizes by comparison.

With just over a month to go before The International 2014 kicks off, it is possible the prize pool could hit $10 million (R100 million) before then. DOTA2.com lists a bunch of stretch goals that have already been unlocked, including new music, base customisation , new models and more, with others like an afterparty broadcast and new upgraded creeps that will unlock the closer the total gets to $10 million, so players have plenty of reason to keep going.

The International 2014 is the fourth DOTA 2 championship to be held, and will feature 16 teams facing off against one another. The event will be broadcast live on the internet and will take place in Seattle, Washington in the US from the 18th to the 21st of July, in a venue that seats over 17 000 spectators.
