What are the most popular Kindle ebooks in South Africa?

A list of 2013’s top ten ebooks purchased by South Africans for their Kindle ereaders (and other non-Amazon ereaders that support the Kindle app) has been revealed by Amazon ahead of the Cape Town International South African Book Fair that’s happening in Cape Town between the 13th and 15th of June.

While the books listed hint at a rather erudite readership, none of the featured authors are South African. The list was announced today via press release.

According to Amazon, the top ten ebooks bought by South Africans are:

  1. Inferno by Dan Brown
  2. And the Mountains Echoed by Khaled Hosseini
  3. Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn
  4. Never Go Back: (Jack Reacher 18) by Lee Child
  5. The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt
  6. Sycamore Row by John Grisham
  7. The Husband’s Secret by Liane Moriarty
  8. The Cuckoo’s Calling (Cormoran Strike) by Robert Galbraith and J. K. Rowling
  9. The Hit (Will Robie 2) by David Baldacci
  10. The Storyteller by Jodi Picoult

The South African Book Fair provides everyone involved with publishing an opportunity to be exposed to new ideas, including ways of partnering up with Amazon to get South African-born wordsmiths published via Amazon’s publishing arm. Hopefully that exposure will result in this list being populated with far more local writers in the coming years.

Amazon is also showing off the new Kindle Paperwhite ereader at the show, which has a next-gen built-in light, suffers no glare in direct sunlight and whose battery lasts for weeks. It’s available right now through local e- and retailers.
