US company to open R80 million solar panel production facility in Cape Town

Cape Town will be the new base of US solar panel manufacturer Jinko Solar, as the firm announced that it will be opening a R80 million 120 MW solar photovoltaic (PV) module production facility in the Mother City.

Jinko Solar is no stranger to South Africa. Last year it supplied 304kW of high-efficient solar PV modules to one of the largest roof-mounted PV Solar plants in South Africa.

“South Africa is becoming a leader in renewable energy. Within the space of three years the REIPPP (renewable energy independent power producer procurement programme) model is fast developing into a new industry sector,” Trade and Industry minister Rob Davies said.

According to Fin24, Davies added that the facility will be opened in response to the roll-out of the REIPPP, “where 148 MW of solar PV projects had been procured. Since the beginning of the undertaking it had deployed 300 MW of solar PV panels, reaching around 30% of market share.”

Davies said that its projects like these that make South Africa one of the best places to come to for manufacturing and developing renewable energy products and strategies.

“[This] once again highlights the attractiveness of South Africa as an investment destination and will contribute further to establishing the country as a hub for renewable energy and other green economy industries.”

Jinko Solar, in a previous media statement explained that South Africa is an important market for them.

“South Africa is one of our key markets where we have already achieved around 300 MW in contracts with our partners for the 1st and 2nd rounds of the public tenders and we expect to strengthen our position from current and future opportunities in the coming 3rd round of public tenders.”
