Awesome timeline of the Star Wars universe that George Lucas destroyed

For those of us working in the media industry, the only people known to be more pedantic than lawyers at Star Wars producer LucasFilm were those who curated the stories from the books, games and comics that made up the ‘Expanded Universe’ and made sure new submissions met canonical requirements.

Back in April, however, it was announced that the expanded universe would be relegated to an ‘alternate universe ‘ status, so that the new Star Wars movies could reforge the path of the characters without needing to take into account 35 years of sources beyond the six feature films. Storytelling in Star Wars is now more like that in, say, the Batman or Superman worlds where it’s the setting rather than the consistency that’s important.

It might not be such a blow if it weren’t for the fact that the precision with which Expanded Universe was curated meant many fans did feel it was legitimate to assume that if, for example, Chewbacca had been killed then it must be because Lucas willed it (or at least allowed it) to be so.

One fan has gone to extraordinary lengths to explain why pulling the pin on the expanded universe was a callous act of treason – and that fan is the lovely ex-PC Gamerite (and former colleague – Ed) Rich McCormick over at The Verge. McCormick’s put together an incredible interactive timeline which every fan should witness. Go look at it, now, as a beautiful example of how all the expanded universe once fitted together so well.
