Oz unbans gory shooter four years after release

Left 4 Dead 2, a four-year-old shooter from Valve Software, has finally been unbanned by our friends in the land down under. This is due to a new R18+ rating category for violent games with visuals and themes that the Australian government deemed too extreme for the sensitive little flowers that are the Australian people which the game now qualifies for.

That’s more than a little odd, given the fact that the country has produced people like Steve Irwin, Paul Hogan and kick-ass bands like AC/DC as well as the vast majority of the planet’s deadliest animals. Their rugby team even gives the Boks a run for their money every now and then, and our Boks are hard as nails.

Back in 2009, the R18+ rating didn’t exist so the game was denied classification, meaning it couldn’t be sold in its original form in the country. It had to be seriously altered before the Office of Film and Literature Classification would allow it to go on sale, and of course, a zombie game without buckets of blood and body parts a-flying, well, sucked.

PC Gamer has reported that Valve Software has re-submitted the original uncensored version of Left 4 Dead 2 to the Office of Film and Literature Classification, and it has finally been classified with an R18+ rating and is thus legal to sell and own in Australia.

PC gamers are an inventive bunch and have probably been playing the uncensored version of the game for years already, but it’s nice to see Australians being given the actual choice as to what movies and games they’d like to watch/play rather than having their options dictated by someone in government.
