GoPro unveils cheaper, low-end action camera

While we revealed the new GoPro Hero 4 last week, which has subsequently been unveiled by GoPro, the maker of the ‘world’s most versatile camera’ has also shown off a cheaper, low-end version of its best-selling action gadget.

Simply known as ‘Hero’, the matte grey model will have most of the Hero 4’s functionality stripped out, and will only be able to record video in 1080p, instead of 4K. It also won’t be sporting the new design of the Hero 4, but will rather stick to the original design of the Hero 3.

“HERO makes it simple to capture and share your life. Built directly into a rugged, waterproof housing, and featuring high-quality 1080p30 and 720p60 video, HERO delivers the same immersive footage that’s made GoPro one of the best-selling cameras in the world—all in a simplified experience that’s easy for everyone,” GoPro explained on its website.

The Hero 4 Black will be able to record in 4K video resolution at 30fps, 2.7K at 50fps, 1440p at 80fps, 1080p at 120fps, 960p at 120fps, and 720p at 120fps. The biggest omission is the ability to record at 240fps. It will still be able to capture still images at 12 megapixels at 30 frames per second.

The Hero 4 Silver, on the other hand, will not be able to record in 4K, but will have the touchscreen on the back panel – and both models will be sporting a new design.

Both models will be available on 5 October at $500 and $400, respectively.  The Hero will be on sale for $130, but not price or availability for South Africa has been announced yet.
