Expect to see more strange phones from BlackBerry

BlackBerry was once at the pinnacle of mobile phones, with almost every user seemingly making use of the super-secure device. While it’s stock price, reputation and number of mobile phones have been waning over the last couple of years, it recently launched the rather odd-shaped BlackBerry Passport – an almost square phone beating usual design convention.

But if BlackBerry gets its way, you can expect to see a lot stranger and oddly shaped phones in the future, as it plans to launch at least one every year.

“When it comes to design and being a little bit disruptive, we want that ‘wow’ factor. Not all of the products will have it, but we definitely have opportunities,” explained Ron Louks, the head of BlackBerry Devices.

He added that BlackBerry has already started planning and developing next year’s model. “From a roadmap perspective, I’m pretty happy with where we are at for next year,” he said.

BlackBerry CEO Jon Chen also confirmed that the Passport should be getting an update, as he can see a newer version being developed.

“Given the receptivity for the Passport, I know that we’ll have at least another generation of that device. I also carry very high hopes for the Classic, and I’ve spoken with a lot of people that want it … so I think we will have another iteration on that, and there will be a new concept device too.”

The BlackBerry Classic to which Chen is referring to will be made available later this year, and resembles the company’s once-popular BlackBerry Bold smartphone.
