Microsoft launched a technical preview of its next operating system, Windows 10, earlier this month, and together with that the Windows Insider Program. The program has been designed so that users can help Microsoft iron out some issues and difficulties while the full OS is still in development.

It seems that a rather large amount of Windows users were rather eager to help the company out, so much so that one million people have already signed up to tweak and test Windows 10 as and when updates get added.

“Over the weekend, we hit one million registrants for the Windows Insider Program. That equates to a lot of people using the Windows 10 Technical Preview and sending us feedback,” Microsoft said in a blog post.

You might be wondering how much tweaking is going on behind the scenes, as well as the volume of the suggestions that Microsoft has received. It turns out quite a bit – “over 200 000 pieces of user-initiated feedback have been submitted to us via the Windows Feedback app from Windows Insiders like you.”

Microsoft also detailed that the majority of those who installed the Windows 10 Technical Preview did so on actual PCs and not virtual machines. “Only 36% of installations of the Windows 10 Technical Preview are in VMs. The remaining 64% are all on actual PCs. This makes us confident that a lot of the feedback is based on “medium-term” use and not just a few minutes of experimentation.”

The use of actual PCs can be correlated with app usage on the Technical Preview, as users have been pretty busy.

“Another indicator that we have solid usage is the number of app-launches that happen on a device. 68% of you are launching more than 7 apps/day, and some people are using it even more heavily. We have seen about 25% of devices running the Windows 10 Technical Preview launching more than 26 apps per day, and 5% launching a whopping 68 apps per day!”
