Stellenbosch Innovation Conference returns to focus on new tech across Africa

After successfully hosting its inaugural Stellenbosch Innovation Conference (SIC) last year – a conference which looked at transforming the Western Cape town into an innovation district – the Stellenbosch Innovation District (SID) is back this month hosting SIC with a new theme: building momentum for innovation.

The SIC aims to investigate innovations that will make Africa a smarter place by turning visions into social action in partnership with academia, government and local and international business.

According to the SID, it wants to capitalise on the opportunities of a rapidly changing world, by turning urban, social, economic and environmental challenges into opportunities through smart innovation.

“South Africa is now part of BRICS, and rapid development and progress is now taking place in these countries. India’s new government for example have pledged to build 100 smart cities in India by 2020,” SID says.  “How is Africa going to respond to this global movement? The Discussion will be centered around – how South Africa take the lead, and how can Stellenbosch as a town become the first test of an African smart space.”

Seminars and workshops on these topics will be held, with guest speakers such as Cecilia Kinuthia-Njenga from the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) Southern Africa, mayor of Stellenbosch Conrad Sidego and Daan Velthausz CSIR Pretoria, set to give talks.

The Stellenbosch Innovation Conference takes place on 31st October at the Protea Hotel in Technopark, Stellenbosch. Half-day and full-day passes start at R280 and ticket sales end on 28th October.

Visit the SID website to get your ticket.
