MTN bringing Firefox phone to South Africa

It’s been a while since we heard from the Mozilla Foundation about its plans for Firefox OS, a truly open source rival to Android for low cost smartphones. Back in March, we heard rumours that ZTE and MTN were looking to partner on a handset, but they were swiftly denied.

News in this morning is that we we’re back in the running. MTN South Africa, Airtel and Tigo have all confirmed that they will be the first African operators to offer Firefox phones.

There’s no news on model specifics, prices or timeframes beyond “soon” yet, we’ll update as soon as we have more. Phones running Firefox OS are currently available in 25 countries around the world. The operating system is designed to run pure HTML5 apps, and includes extra privacy features and data cost calculators built in that you don’t get with Android and iOS.
