GoPro drones coming in 2015

2015 looks like it’ll be the year of the drone for the company behind the wildly popular GoPro actions cameras. A report from the Wall Street Journal suggests that GoPro will release a consumer drone in the $500 to $1 000 price range (R5 500 – R11 000).

The GoPro drones will be similar to those many consumers are already familiar with – like the Parrot AR Drone – but will be more akin in functionality to the DJI Phantom 2, a drone which can carry a GoPro action camera aimed at professional and amateur film makers, something which we had a blast playing with last month.

GoPro’s drones are expected to use a similar multi-rotor design as the other drones but may include their own high definition cameras like those found in the GoPro action cams themselves, making them greater resolution and ability than those of Parrot and eliminating the need to purchase a GoPro camera in addition to a drone like the DJI Phantom 2.

GoPro’s latest line of Hero 4 action cameras were announced in September with drastically increased low-light performance and improved 4k video recording. The company recently listed on the NASDAQ exchange in the US and pulled in former Microsoft Executive, and a once potential successor to Steve Ballmer, Tony Bates as president of the company.
