Samsung begins updating the Galaxy S5 to Android Lollipop

The largest Android smartphone manufacturer, Samsung, has started the roll out if the latest version of Google’s Android operating system onto its flagship Galaxy S5 smartphone around the world. (That also makes Samsung the first of the major providers to roll out a Lollipop update to a flagship smartphone that we know of.)

The latest version of the Android operating system version 5.0, colourfully known as Lollipop, was announced at Google I/O in June this year and has already rolled out to the Nexus family of devices.

The update has already begun to ship to Galaxy S5 users in Poland in the form of over-the-air (OTA) and desktop updates through Samsung’s Kies.

If brings a host of new features to the OS including lockscreen notifications and a new Android Run Time (ART) that allows for 64-bit operating processor architecture as well as bringing better memory management and the associated battery life improvements that come with that.

If you’re impatient then the folks at SamMobile already have the firmware from the Polish rollout on their site which you can download and install. Just be wary of the fact that it may not be optimised for South African networks which could result in decreased battery life and potential signal loss.

We’ve contacted the local Samsung guys to find out when South Africans can expect to get the update but haven’t heard anything back as of yet.

[UPDATE] Samsung South Africa has confirmed that the roolout of Android 5.0 to its range of smartphones including the Galxy S5 will take place from “early next year” but that “the exact date has not been decided yet.”
