STEMbees bringing Hour of Code to Ghana’s girls in tech

STEMbees, a Ghanaian non-profit organisation dedicated to encourage and mentor young women in the West African country to pursue careers in STEM, is hosting this year’s official Hour of Code in Ghana for girls from the Korle Gonno Girls’ Basic School.

Hour of Code is an international event held in various schools and venues where youths take part in a free hour-long introductory course in coding created to introduce them to the field. The goal is to have reached 100 million learners by the end of 2014 during Computer Science Education Week, taking place between 8th and 14th December .

“We believe that every student should have the opportunity to learn computer science. Our focus is to encourage girls in an effort to help minimize the gender gap prevalent in STEM fields. Being introduced to technology early will help nurture problem-solving skills, logic and creativity and give students a foundation for success in any 21st-century career path,” said Linda Ansong, founder of STEMbees.

STEMbees will be hosting Hour of Code Ghana at the school on Saturday 13th December.
