[MAP MONDAY] Most of the world’s population does not have internet access

According to a report by McKinsey and Co, four billion people around the world don’t have any access to the internet, that’s 60% of the globe’s population.

The map below shows that Africa, parts of Asia, the Middle East and South America are the worst affected areas:

The report estimates that approximately 64% of these offline individuals live in rural areas, 50% have a below average income, 18% are elders above 55, 28% are illiterate and 52% are women.

In good news, however, McKinsey and Co indicates that the situation is slowly but surely improving with an additional 500 million to 900 million people predicted to get online by 2017.

“Going forward, sustained, inclusive Internet user growth will require a multipronged strategy—one that will depend on close collaboration among players across the ecosystem, including governments, policy makers, nongovernmental organizations, network operators, device manufacturers, content and service providers, and brands,” McKinsey and Co added.
