[CES 2015] Sony goes all in on Android TV in 2015

Japanese electronics giant Sony has just finished its press conference at this year’s CES and the big news is that the full range of Sony TVs for 2015 will be running on Google’s latest attempt at taking over the living room called Android TV.

It opens Sony’s TVs up to the library of apps available on the Google Play app store already as well as Google’s voice search capability for finding content through the search app on the TVs which will be available in 42 different languages from the moment that the TVs become available.

Because of the choice to go with Android in almost every aspect of Sony’s consumer electronics portfolio there will be many areas where the technology compliments each other such as a new smartwatch app that will allow smart TVs to be controlled from the wrist.

The all of the 4K TVs in the 2015 catalog Sony will feature a brand new image processor called the X1 processor which Sony says will analyses the source video stream’s resolution and bitrate on the fly correcting and enhancing the colour and contrast of the images before sending them through to the screen.

The one model in particular that was shown off was part of the new Sony X930C series of 4K TVs which are available in 55 inch, 65 inch and 75 inch sizes and are just 4.7mm thick all the way through making them thinner than Sony’s flagship Xperia Z3 smartphone.

Pricing and availability is still unknown and Sony is being rather cagey about it without wanting to scare off consumers.
