IKEA to start selling wireless charging desks and lamps

No matter what smartphone or tablet you have, there is one thing they all have in common: they need to be charged. While some need to be charged more than others, the act is all the same.

Furnisher retailer IKEA aims to make that act a bit easier with a new innovation it has lined up for its furniture.

The retailer, which currently only operates in Europe and North America, announced plans to roll out a line of furniture that will wirelessly charge mobile devices equipped with the technology. So in theory, all you have to do is put your phone on one of the desk or bedside tables, and it will start charging automatically without any cables.

“Through research and home visits, we know that people hate cable mess. They worry about not finding the charger and running out of power. Our new innovative solutions, which integrate wireless charging into home furnishings, will make life at home simpler,” said Jeanette Skjelmose, IKEA’s Business Area Manager Lighting and Wireless Charging, in a press statement.

But the technology isn’t just limited to flat surfaces, as IKEA explains that the collection also includes desk lamps – pretty much anything that can supply an electric current.

The collection makes use of the Qi global certification standard in collaboration with the Wireless Power Consortium, meaning that if your phone is Qi-compliant, it will most definitely work. The company also plans to roll out about 10 wireless charging products a year as the technology becomes more mainstream.

“We have created smart wireless solutions so you don’t need to see the cables anymore. Many products can be charged at the same time, but you still have a beautiful wireless home”, explains IKEA designer David Wahl.

Sadly, IKEA isn’t in South Africa, but you can easily make your own wireless charging post in the meantime.
